Two people die in Route 11 crash today in Point Township

NORTHUMBERLAND - Route 11 between Danville has reopened this afternoon following a double-fatal crash at Ridge Road in Point Township.

The head-on crash at the intersection of Route 11 and Ridge Road involved three vehicles and one of the vehicles ended up over a guardrail and down an embankment near the railroad tracks at about 11 a.m. Friday morning.

Officials confirmed two people have died as a result of the accident.

Northumberland County Coroner James F. Kelley was called to the scene at about 11:30 a.m., but officials have not released information on the number of deaths or identities of those involved.

Traffic on the normally busy road came to a standstill as emergency responders detoured traffic around the accident scene, with traffic using Routes 54, 642 and 147, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said.

The road remained clsoed for most of the afternoon as investigators, including a state police accident reconstruction team, worked at the scene.

Crews from Upper Augusta, Point Township, Northumberland and Sunbury responded to the crash Friday morning.
