---- — Across the United States, March is recognized as American Red Cross Month. As one of the nation's best known humanitarian organizations, the Red Cross has been at the forefront of helping Americans prevent, prepare for and respond to large and small disasters for 128 years. Super storm Sandy was yet again the perfect reminder of the sudden, swift devastation that can occur at a moment's notice, sweeping peoples' lives away. Many hundreds of families are still reeling from the aftermath and the Red Cross, through its network of partners and volunteers, continues to provide assistance, as it will until the needs are met.
In March, as it always does, the Red Cross is focusing on the volunteers and employees who demonstrate such compassion and generosity by supporting the Red Cross in the SUN Area and around the country. Several events will salute the work of those in the Red Cross family; our Heroes Breakfast on March 22, a Dress-Down event, occurring every Friday at area banks and schools, and Dine-Out for Red Cross, which gives local eateries a chance to fill their seats with diners while donating a portion of their proceeds from that day to the services of the Red Cross. Please listen to local radio stations and watch this newspaper for the restaurant of the day. Eat out for a good cause.
Thus far in 2013 the Red Cross has responded to 32 local emergencies, assisted 44 families with food, shelter and emotional support following the devastating loss of their home due to a house fire. Thanks to the large success of our community blood drives, the Red Cross has conducted bloodmobiles, collecting thousands of units of blood. This blood has the potential to help tens of thousands of people in need of lifesaving blood products.
Across this community, the Red Cross is an organization people can rely on for help, comfort, assistance and compassion. On behalf of the SUN Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, I thank you for your support to help us continue our service to those in who need us, every day.
