LEWISBURG — The Jerry Granelli Trio will perform in concert Wednesday, March 6, at 8:30 p.m. in Bucknell Hall at Bucknell University. The trio includes Jerry Granelli, drums; J. Anthony Granelli, bass; and Briggan Krauss, saxophone.
Jazz Times magazine calls Granelli “one of those uncategorizable veteran percussionists who’s done it all. A veteran of the San Francisco jazz scene, Granelli’s recent flourish of recordings has documented remarkable collaborations between the generations.”
Born in San Francisco in 1940, Granelli spent a day in 1948 with legendary drummer Gene Krupa. Later he worked with Dave Brubeck’s drummer Joe Morello before playing, recording and touring with the Vince Guaraldi Trio, providing the steady swing beats for the classic “Charlie Brown “Peanuts” theme song,” and with the Denny Zeitlin Trio.
In the early ‘80s, Granelli played in a trio with Ralph Towner and Gary Peacock after which he began recording as a leader, first for the label ITM, and then for Intuition. By 1987, he was directing the Jazz and Popular Music Department at a Canadian conservatory. He has released 16 recordings.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, is part of the ongoing Jazz at Bucknell First Wednesdays series.
Jazz at Bucknell is a chamber series conceived to present international modern masters and young visionaries, showcasing the entire tradition of jazz, from standards to the Avant-Garde, with an eye on artists who continue the innovative tradition of the music with their personal approaches to sound, style and composition.
