SELINSGROVE—The Lore Degenstein Gallery of Susquehanna University will hold its late summer exhibition, “A Complex Weave: Women and Identity in Contemporary Art,” Saturday through Oct. 15. An opening reception will be held 7-9 p.m. Saturday.
The exhibition, featuring guest speaker Martin Rosenberg, professor of art history at Rutgers University, is an insightful and sometimes emotional immersion into feminist art. Provocative and compelling, the exhibition reinforces feminist art as a golden thread that has allowed generations of women artists to expand their horizons and express their visions.
“I would venture to say that most people in the area have never seen an exhibition like this one,” said Daniel Olivetti, gallery director. “This exhibition presents the work of 16 prominent contemporary women artists of diverse backgrounds who address aspects of identity through sculpture, video, painting, prints, fiber and metals, photography and installation.”
The Lore Degenstein Gallery exhibits, interprets, collects and preserves objects of art and material culture that support academic investigations and contribute to the cultural life of central Pennsylvania. While adhering to professional standards of museum ethics, the gallery preserves and displays art from both the university’s permanent collection and loans from other institutions and private collections.
All gallery exhibitions and lectures are free and open to the public. The facility is wheelchair accessible. The gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The gallery is closed during university recesses.
