SELINSGROVE —
The Susquehanna University Artist Series will present “Song of the Phoenix” by the renowned Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Degenstein Center Theater.
“Song of the Phoenix” features original and unique choreography by Nai-Ni Chen, whose repertoire seamlessly blends ancient rituals and modern concepts. Audience members will be treated to the majestic thunder of martial arts and the rhythm of poetry as dancers glide across the stage with color, intensity and a whisper of Chinese tradition.
“This is a rare opportunity to see live the work of an outstanding New York dance company that is famous for its technical accuracy and unique blend of American modern dance and Asian aesthetics of movement,” said Marcos Krieger, assistant professor of music at Susquehanna University. “Viewers should watch for surprising patterns of symmetry and balance that are [largely] unknown in the western way of thinking.”
The phoenix, a symbol showcased throughout the entirety of the performance, is known in both eastern and western cultures as a creature of strength and majesty. Through movement and unique dance technique, the awe-inspiring bird will come to life before the audience’s eyes.
“This bird, a mythical creature, is present in both eastern and western cultures as a force of life, either because of its ability to revive itself from its own ashes or, in more eastern understanding, because of its connection with the mysteries of feminine power and procreation,” said Krieger. “‘The Song of the Phoenix’ is described as a re-creation of movements, blending poetry and war, beauty and power, external movements of the body and internal movements of the soul.”
Tickets are available at the Susquehanna University box office, located in the Degenstein Center Theater lobby, or by calling 372-ARTS. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and $5 for non-SU students.
