LEWISBURG — Pianist Barry Hannigan will give a recital on Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weis Center at Bucknell University.
The program, which is open to the public without charge, includes Rachmaninoff’s Melodie, Op. 3, No. 3 and Waltz, Op. 10, No. 2, and Chopin’s Nocturne in C Minor, Tarantelle, and Ballade in F Minor.
According to Hannigan, “The Tarantelle is little-known, yet it is a fully mature work and bears the relatively late Opus number of 43.”
Other works on the program are two intermezzi by Brahms, which Hannigan describes as “brooding ruminations on beautiful melodies;” two ragtime pieces by William Ryden, written in the 1990s; Arno Babadjanian’s Elegy, described by Hannigan as “a gorgeous Russian melody;” and Keener’s Way, a piece written for Hannigan by Alexandra Pierce.
International performer Hannigan is known for his piano performances throughout the United States and abroad, with appearances in Russia, China, England, Ireland, New Zealand and Norway.
An active concert soloist, he has appeared as a guest artist at a host of American universities, such as UCLA, Yale, Cornell, and the Universities of Oregon, Colorado, Illinois, Arizona State and Texas.
Festival and series performances include venues such as Real Art Ways in Hartford, the Syracuse New Music Society, Wildflower Festival, and Roulette in New York City.
He is on the roster of Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, and dozens of his performances have been aired on National Public Radio affiliate stations across the United States.
For three years, he toured Pennsylvania promoting works by living Pennsylvania composers, underwritten by grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
He has received a Solo Recitalist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, an award intended to recognize the nation’s outstanding recitalists.
His recordings are available on SCI, SEAMUS, Opus One, Black Canyon Records and for Radio Telefis Eireann in Dublin, Ireland.
The recipient of a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music, he joined the Bucknell faculty in 1978.
He is the recipient of many awards and prizes, including the National Endowment for the Arts and Bucknell’s Class of 1956 Lectureship for inspirational teaching.
