LEWISBURG — Notable jazz ensemble Dena DeRose Trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Lobby of the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Janet Weis Cabaret Jazz Series. Bucknell University acknowledges with funding from the Family of Janet C. Weis which makes the Janet Weis Cabaret Jazz Series possible.
Kathryn Maguet, executive director of the Weis Center for the Performing Arts, says, “We're thrilled to introduce the multi-dimensional Dena DeRose to central Pennsylvania audiences.
"She's equally talented as a pianist and a singer — her fine piano work complements a singular and sultry voice. Ms. DeRose's superb musicianship and immaculate phrasings will certainly be a treat to savor!” Maguet said.
Joel Siegel of the Washington City Paper described DeRose as "The most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn."
DeRose has accumulated an impressive list of performance credits, performing at legendary clubs around the world like the Blue Note, Smoke and the Jazz Standard in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Body and Soul in Tokyo, The Jazz Showcase in Chicago, The Jazz Center in Istanbul, and Alexander Platz in Rome, as well as major jazz festivals.
As a recording artist, she has nine CDs as a leader to her credit, all of which have received superior accolades.
The next event in the Weis Center series is Stefon Harris and the Ninety Miles Project on Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. at the Weis Center. This Cuban-American jazz project was recorded over the span of a week in Havana and brought local Cuban musicians into the recording sessions. Tickets for the Sept. 15 concert are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors 62 and over, and $10 for children 18 and under and are available at www.bucknell.edu/BoxOffice or by calling the Box Office at 570-577-1000.
