BEAVER SPRINGS — About 12 children between the ages of eight and 13 had the opportunity to help put together Middlecreek Council on the Arts' production of "Godspell" earlier this month through a theater camp.
Matthew Fry, 15, of Middlecreek, who was a camp counselor, along with Collette Saez, 15, of Beavertown, taught the kids about the history of "Godspell" and theater as well as how to practice for auditions.
They took part in a workshop on costume design, given by Joanne Landis, a local artist who is a retired teacher from the Fashion Institute in New York City. During the workshop, students reviewed styles of dress through time and applied it to theater.
They also got a lesson on painting techniques for set design by Andy Rich, associate professor of theater.
Even though Fry describes himself as "still a kid," he said the children he worked with were "adorable and fun to work with."
Saez added that she, too, "loved being with them."
Four of the children who participated in the camp will be filling roles in "Godspell."
"Mostly smaller roles," Fry said. "Some are singing songs, but I really feel like any experience is a good experience."
"Godspell" was the first musical for the Middlecreek Council on the Arts, or Generoo, according to Beverly Kline, who is on the board.
"When we applied for the Woodcock grant, we decided to combine the camp and 'Godspell,'" she said. "All of the campers are being featured in the show via video."
The children enacted the story of the good samaritan on video that will be projected onto the wall during the production.
The theater camp was sponsored by the Spring Township supervisors and the Woodcock Foundation for the Appreciation of the Arts, Inc, which supports community development when there is an opportunity to improve the educational, economic and environmental circumstances of a community in need.
