LEWISBURG — The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will present “Body Against Body” at 8 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University.
“Body Against Body” is an evening of dance that revives and reconsiders the duets and solos that launched Bill T. Jones and the late Arnie Zane (1948-88) onto the early 1980s downtown performance scene and redefined the duet form.
These pieces remain some of the most significant examples of the postmodern aesthetic and challenge both performers and viewers with their notions of task-based movement and non-narrative structure. The works take on new life through the diverse dancers of Jones’ company, providing a rare look at the origins of a widely acclaimed choreographer.
Vanity Fair has said of Jones, “No other dancer-choreographer working today allows past, present, and future to mingle so freely in his body.”
Born in rural Florida and raised in upstate New York, Jones trained in classical ballet and modern dance at the State University of New York, Binghamton. In 1982 he and Zane cofounded the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, which is today recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the modern dance world. The Company has performed worldwide in more than 200 cities in 30 countries on every major continent.
Jones has created more than 140 works for his own company as well as for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Boston Ballet, Berlin Opera Ballet and AXIS Dance Company. His awards and honors include several New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Awards, Izzie Awards, and choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. He also received the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize given for “outstanding contributions to the beauty of the world and to mankind’s enjoyment and understanding of life.”
Tickets are $25 per person. Discounts for senior citizens and students are available. Tickets also may be purchased one hour prior to each performance.

Tickets also are available in person from several locations including the Weis Center lobby weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University bookstore in Lewisburg weekdays and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 12:30 to 4 p.m.; and the CAPS Center Box Office, located on the ground floor of the Elaine Langone Center, weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The next event in the Weis Center series is Feb. 18 with The Shelley Oliver Tap Dancers and the David Leonhardt Jazz Trio. The free family matinee at 1 p.m. is a Pennsylvania affair, with Muhlenberg professor Shelley Oliver joining David Leonhardt, who has twice been the Artist in Residence at Lafayette College and is on the roster of The Pennsylvania Arts on Tour.
