Conservation banquet

Anglers and conservationists are invited to attend the 2013 Conservation Banquet hosted by the R.B. Winter Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

The banquet is March 22 at 6 p.m. at the Sunbury Social Club on the island between Sunbury and Northumberland.

Ken Okorn will give a presentation on touring and fishing in Wyoming. Ken is a life-long angler and fly-tier from the Carlisle area who has traveled and fished extensively. His focus will be on little-known streams with lots of scenery pictures. Okorn is a licensed guide for the Yellow Breeches Outfitters in Boiling Springs.

The evening, which includes a buffet dinner and wonderful camaraderie, is $25 per person. Please contact Harry Holliday (743-1666) with questions or to make your reservation.

The next monthly meeting of the R.B. Winter Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be held on Wednesday at the Towne Tavern in Lewisburg. Dinner starts at 6 p.m., and at 7 p.m. Don Daughenbugh, who is a fishing legend from the Williamsport area, will be the evening’s presenter.



Conservation corps

Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited’s Coldwater Conservation Corps will hold a water quality monitoring workshop at 9 a.m. Saturday in State College.

Participants will learn to use monitoring equipment, select monitoring locations, report an incident if observed and use the Trout Unlimited’s online data portal and mapping application.

Learn GPS, geo-caching

Never used a GPS but would like to learn how? What is geo-caching anyhow? On March 15-16 from 10-11:30 a.m. you can find out more about these technologies at the R.B. Winter Environmental Learning Center. A limited number of GPS units will be available to borrow if you do not have one of your own. Choose which ever day works best for you and your family or friends. Please pre-register for this program by calling 966-1455.



Volunteer potluck

If you are, have been or want to be an R.B. Winter State Park volunteer, you’re invited to a potluck dinner that will be held in the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center on March 22 at 6 p.m. Just bring along your favorite covered dish and your family and friends to share in this festive event. Please call the park office at 966-1455 to let them know you’re coming.

There will be a discussion about what’s new with the Pennsylvania Conservation Volunteers, and learn about new projects going on around the park such as upcoming special events and opportunities to serve as campground hosts. The evening will conclude with an awards ceremony.



Penns Creek clean-up

You’re invited to join Trout Unlimited members for their annual Penn’s Creek cleanup that will be held April 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This would be an excellent service opportunity for young people. Everything needed (garbage bags, gloves and a vest) is provided.

You will be helping to clean up the Penns Creek stream banks, from Weikert to Poe Paddy. As an added benefit, the gates open to the old railroad bed near Cherry Run for you and the crew to clean up the areas in the fly fishing-only area. This will be a great chance to see the entire area and scout out your next trip while helping with a worthy cause.

Friends of the NRA

The next Friends of the NRA event that will be held in our area is scheduled for April 14 at 1 p.m. at the Radisson Penn Harris in Camp Hill.

This will be the Cumberland Valley Friends of the NRA annual banquet.

These “Friends” events are always a good time with great food, lots of door prizes and tons of fellowship.
