Don Steese's Outdoors column: The cost of going birdy
I was really happy the other day when I heard some economist on T.V. saying that inflation wasn’t a problem — then my wife and I went to the grocery store. My wife had about a pound of coupons and we still left $150 at the checkout counter. I then put a bag under each arm and stomped out of the store. Apparently economists hire someone else to do their grocery shopping for them. Anyhow, the grocery store episode got me thinking about how much the other necessities in my life actually cost.

Ken Maurer's Outdoors column: Go the extra mile
Trout season will be here before you know it. I’m hoping the mild winter continues right up to and including Mar. 31, when the early trout season opens in the southeastern counties. Who knows, as weird as the weather’s been, we may have to follow a snow plow to the trout streams. I’ve seen snow in April more than once.

Don Steese's Outdoors column: So long, back tags!
Starting tomorrow, Pennsylvania hunters will no longer have to display their hunting licenses on their backs.
The new PA hunting licenses are designed to be carried in your wallet, like they are in nearly every other state in the U.S. Slowly but surely Pennsylvania is joining everyone else in the 21st century! -
Ken Maurer's Outdoors column: Close calls outside

Since I don’t seem to be suffering an attack of creativity at the moment ...

Ken Maurer's Outdoors column: Da goot olt daze
I ran into a guy the other day who said something I haven’t heard in a long time. I forget what he was even talking about, but he said, “By gums.”

Ken Maurer's Outdoors column: New gear on tap
There are some new items and variations of old items coming to the fishing market this year. There’s always something new or different, and this year will be no exception.

Don Steese's Outdoors column: PGC makes changes
At their annual winter meeting, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has proposed seasons and bag limits identical to this past year’s, with the exception of expanding mentored youth hunting to include the fall turkey season.

Bill Bowman's college football column: Paterno made impact at PSU
My favorite Joe Paterno story was also one of his favorites. Must have been because I heard it at least once a year over the past 15 years. Joseph Vincent Paterno wasn't supposed to be a football coach.
