Mifflinburg holds off Towanda for second win in a row

COAL TOWNSHIP — The Mifflinburg defense made a second-quarter touchdown stand up, but needed a missed extra point and a late missed field goal to survive Towanda, 7-6, in a nonleague football game on Friday night, picking up its second consecutive win.

The Black Knights (1-5) scored their lone touchdown in the third quarter, but missed the extra point, then caught a break in the fourth quarter when the Wildcats turned the ball over deep in their own territory. However, Towanda missed the potential field goal to help the Wildcats hold the lead.

Mifflinburg (2-4) has now won back-to-back games after beginning the season 0-4, allowing just six points.

The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead with 6:48 left in the first half when Devin Hendrix found Oakley Whitsel for an eight-yard TD and Victor Suquet added the extra point, which proved to be the most important point of the game.

Towanda got its touchdown late in the third quarter, also on a passing play. Sophomore Noah Huff hit Brandon Daniello with a 39-yard scoring strike with 4:46 left in the third quarter, but the failed extra point made it 7-6.

Kyle Failor led the Wildcats’ ground attack with 83 yards.

Huff led the way for the Black Knights, running for 89 yards and passing for 113.
