Myers shines on offensive side

HERSHEY -- Spencer Myers has made a name for himself in Selinsgrove's state championship run for his outstanding play as a defensive tackle for the Seals, but Friday night against Manheim Central, it was Myers' play on offense that turned out to be the big difference.

"We saw some stuff that they were weak in and coach (Mike) Bowman came down and made some changes. We went heavy, moved Shuck down to tackle and moved Spencer out to tight end," Guard Logan Hetherington said. "That worked wonders for us. We just had Myers to get outside on their linebackers (Dakota Royer and Lowen Johnson)."

The Seals, playing without their starting backfield of tailback Kyle Reinard and fullback Matt Wenrich, worked a toss play with tailback Cameron Benner early in the half and then pounded the ball inside with fullback Seth Lauver.

"At halftime, we made some adjustments and moved Spencer outside. That was the play that we wanted to run the majority of the time in the second half," Benner said. "I was just able to make some runs of Spencer's shoulder off that play."

Benner had a team-high 64 yards on nine carries, all in the second half, most coming on outside toss plays.

"We went to our 31 play and our 39 play, which is our toss plays," Selinsgrove coach Dave Hess said. "We flipped Spencer over and went with a heavy set. We wanted to mash them on the outside. We wanted to get the ball upfield with Spencer. We felt we had a physical mismatch with Spencer and their linebackers."

It was a task which Myers relished.

"They have great linebackers, one is going to Penn State (Royer) and the other has a bunch of tackles," Myers said. "I don't what it was. The coaches thought I could get the job done and wanted to switch it up to see what happened. I told them I could get the job done and I just went out and did it."
