LEWISBURG —
Sometimes beating up opposing football players isn’t enough for Brandon Smith.
Sometimes, he might go home and bang on his drum set.
Already known throughout the state as a great football player, what most fans don’t know is that the senior fullback and all-state linebacker is a drummer in “Core Flex,” a teen band.
Don’t try to find them on YouTube or on the pop music charts.
These young people are just doing it for fun.
Smith said classmate Jacob Ziegler started the band in eighth grade. They performed in a middle school talent show on the final day of the school year.
“We decided we should play a song and that’s where we got our start. Jacob (a sprinter and hurdler for the Lewisburg track team) is more serious about it than me.” he said.’
But he said Ziegler is a good friend and that is why he does it. “We only practice about five times a year when we get a gig, like Relay for Life, or the school fall fair fund raiser.
“We usually find a gig and then get one or two practices and then play,” he said.
In addition to Smith playing the drums, Ziegler plays guitar and sings, senior Kristen Deetz plays bass guitar, senior Maggie Connolly plays keyboards and junior Emily Cole plays the viola.
“We play a good amount of Christian rock music, we play some worship music and sometimes we play Beatles. And Jacob likes Aerosmith, so we play a few of those songs,” he said.

Daily Item names 2012 high school football all-stars
SELINSGROVE - If the 2012 edition of The Daily Item All-Stars were not a fictional team, the quarterback would find a familiar downfield target.
