WILLIAMSPORT —
WILLIAMSPORT — Dribbling the ball upfield, Danville’s Kylie Gorki saw an opening and decided to take it. The senior was a few yards behind the 18-box and let fly a great shot that hit the back right of the goal behind Athens keeper Morgan Westbrook.
The shot gave Danville its first lead of the game and all the momentum as the Ironmen’s offense came alive en route to a 6-1 win against Athens in the District 4 Class AA girls soccer semifinals at Lancer Community Stadium in Loyalsock on Wednesday.
Athens’ Mackenzie Warner scored the game’s first goal off an assist from Mackenzie Hafer to put the Wildcats ahead with 28:50 to play in the first half.
“When they scored, I think it woke (the Ironmen) up. It’s one of those things (where) you’ve got to be ready to play at this level,” Danville coach Tom Craig said. “It doesn’t matter who it is (you’re playing), you’ve got to come out and play. You don’t play, they’re going to beat you. It’s just the way it is.”
The Wildcats held the lead for nearly 13 minutes until Gorki sent a corner to Quinn Albertson, who kicked one in with a bounce to the left of Westbrook to tie the game. It was the first of Danville’s six unanswered goals.
