SUNBURY —
Ever since the Shikellamy Field House opened in 2006, longtime wrestling coach Phil Lockcuff was on a one-man crusade to provide cushioned chairs for the opposing teams.
Ironically, the chairs arrived for Saturday’s Big Seven League meet with Bald Eagle Area, one day after the coach passed away.
Longtime Resilite Wrestling Club member and former officer Tom Michaels addressed the crowd before the start of the meet.
He related how Lockcuff began asking for the chairs from the first time he walked into the building on Walnut Street.
“We told him that we kind of didn’t want the opponents to be too comfortable and he said, ‘You know that’s not the way I want it.’”
And, Michaels said, every time he ran into Lockcuff, the conversation always ended with something to the effect of “How are you doing with those chairs?”
Michaels said the chairs, purchased by the club, actually arrived before Christmas, but they were not good quality and an order was placed with a different company.
“I’m sure the coach is looking down and he is probably saying, ‘How sweet it is?’
Michaels, also a member of the Shikellamy school board, added that the Resilite Wrestling Club is donating the chairs to the school in memory of Lockcuff.
