Seals open new gym with big win

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SELINSGROVE — Playing its first home game this season in the friendly confines of the new elementary school gymnasium, Selinsgrove’s fans weren’t disappointed with their first look of the Seals.

With a spread-out and balanced scoring attack, Selinsgrove prevailed in its home-opener 45-27 over Jersey Shore in a Heartland Athletic Conference Division I matchup.

Lauren Hackenberg scored 12 points to lead Selinsgrove (4-3, 2-2 HACI), which now has to play 18 games in the next five weeks.

Jersey Shore falls to 0-8, 0-4.

Shikellamy 27, Milton 26

MILTON — Down by four points after three quarters, the Braves scored just enough in the fourth period to edge the Black Panthers for the HAC-I win.

Kelly Bickel led Shikellamy (8-3, 3-1 HAC-I) with 12 points.

Mandy Metzger outdueled her counterpart by tallying 13 points for Milton (5-6, 2-2).

Danville 50, Hughesville 21

DANVILLE — Brooke Pierson scored 10 of her game-high 12 points in the first half as the Ironmen got out to a 32-6 halftime lead en route to the HACII win.

Hayley Kay added 10 points for Danville (6-4 overall), which had nine players score at least one point in the game.

Loyalsock 55, Southern Columbia 52

CATAWISSA — Eighteen points from both Keely Henninger and Sami Lane was enough for the Lancers to come away with the HAC-II victory.

Ali Oley scored 16 points and Kyla Lavella added 10 for Southern.

Shamokin 47, Montoursville 28

COAL TOWNSHIP — Tara Sabotchick and Summer Reigle scored 13 points apiece as the Indians took the HAC-I victory.

Sabotchick scored 10 of her points in the first half as Shamokin built an 18-8 halftime lead. Nine of Reigle’s points then came in the second half as the Indians built onto their lead and pulled away.

Upper Dauphin 63, Newport 39

NEWPORT — Three players in double figures, led by Madison Miller’s game-high 12, propelled the Trojans to the Tri-Valley League win.

Brittany Warfel added 11 points and Hope Schreffler chipped in with 10 for Upper Dauphin (5-6 overall).

Darian Holley led Newport with 11 points.

Mount Carmel 58, Central Columbia 45

MOUNT CARMEL — Marisa Farronato scored 11 points and Ranotta Ahrensfield and Kim Andruscavage added 10 points apiece as the Red Tornadoes took the HACII victory. Mount Carmel improves to 6-5 overall.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Minersville 46, Upper Dauphin 42

ELIZABETHVILLE — Zach Markel’s game-high 22 points weren’t enough as the Trojans fell in the nonleague matchup. Scott Dreher added 10 points for Upper Dauphin (6-7).

WRESTLING

Central Columbia 43, Selinsgrove 25

ALMEDIA — The Blue Jays won the first seven matches of the night as they cruised to the HAC crossover victory.

The Seals (0-2) did better in the upper weights, as they won every bout from 152 on. Trent Blair (152), Mike Ede (160), Eric Eaton (171), Ian Frost (189), Spencer Myers (215) and Logan Hetherington (285) picked up the wins for Selinsgrove.
