Pittsburgh redshirt junior fullback Henry Hynoski is getting plenty of accolades prior to the start of the college football season. The Southern Columbia graduate is ranked as the country’s top fullback in his class by CBSsports.com.
Last season, in his first year as a starter, Hynoski (6-foot-2, 260 pounds) was the lead blocker for Dion Lewis, who rushed for 1,799 yards and 17 touchdowns as a freshman. Lewis is being touted as a Heisman Trophy candidate this season.
PRO FOOTBALL: This football season marks the 85th year since the Pottsville Maroons played their inaugural season in the NFL. The Maroons won the NFL title in 1925, only to lose it when the team played Notre Dame — and won — in Philadelphia, thus violating a league rule about playing exhibition games in another NFL’s team’s region (the Frankford Yellow Jackets protested to the league).
Bucknell graduate Harry Dayhoff was a running back for the Maroons in 1925.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Milton graduate and threetime Daily Item Player of the Year Caitlin Landis wasted no time scoring her first collegiate goal at the University of Kentucky. Landis, who started the game and played the full 90 minutes, scored in the second half Saturday night as the Wildcats opened the season with a 4-0 win over Coastal Carolina.
The 13th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions opened their season Friday night by beating host West Virginia 2-1 in overtime. Shikellamy graduate Megan Monroig, a senior defender, played the entire game for Penn State.
Bucknell lost 3-2 to St. Bonaventure in Saturday night’s opener. South Williamsport graduate Christa Matlack had a goal and an assist for the Bison.
PRO SOCCER: Bucknell graduate and two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Conor O’Brien (Class of 2010) has found a home in Denmark.
O’Brien is starting for Blokhus FC, which plays in the Danish Second Division.
The team is based in Pandrup, which is in the northwest region of Denmark.
AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Hughesville’s Levi Oden was voted by coaches in the West Branch and Susquehanna Valley American Legion leagues as the winner of the Kenny Lewis Award.
The award, in honor of the late Kenny Lewis who passed away recently after a long career as a scout for the Phillies, is given to the American Legion Player who shows love for the game of baseball.
Oden hit .435 with 27 hits and 27 runs while driving in 18 more for Hughesville.
CROSSING PATHS: Selinsgrove Speedway sprint car standout Jessica Anderson from Berwick and two time NCAA All-American Track & Field sprinter Erica Hess from Selinsgrove recently found time together at the Speedway.
The duo posed next to Anderson’s sprint car in the pits at the speedway. Anderson will be a sophomore at the University of North Carolina, majoring in mechanical/motorsports engineering. Hess will be a senior at Shippensburg University as a pre-med major.
