LEWISBURG - Credit Claire Paulsen for Lewisburg’s menacing look Thursday.
The Green Dragons (players and coaches alike) all sported eye black. Nothing obnoxious; a simple dash under each eye.
Though it was a Senior Day whim conceived by Paulsen, one of three girls recognized Thursday, it certainly suggested they meant business.
The Dragons scored twice in a 7 1/2-minute span early in the first half, and then held off Midd-West’s strong second-half charge for a 2-1 victory at the Pawling Sports Complex.
Lewisburg avenged a loss by the same score in the teams’ first meeting Sept. 25; averted a tie between the two in the final Heartland-I standings; and swapped seeds for next week’s District 4 Class AA playoffs.
“I don’t know if it will stick,” Dragons coach Emily O’Connor said of the new look, “but it was good luck today.”
Shannon Albright scored just 4 minutes in and then assisted on Maddie Scarr’s goal with 18:25 left in the half.
In a battle of two youthful teams, Lewisburg could have hardly scripted a better start.
