Danville recovered after Honesdale scored the first 10 points of Saturday’s PIAA Class AAA girls basketball first-round game at Marywood University.
When the Lady Hornets came back with a bigger streak before the first half was over, the Lady Ironmen wound up in too big of a hole.
Honesdale used 16 straight points to take control on the way to a 44-30 victory.
“That stretch in the second quarter killed us,” Danville coach Steve Moser said. “We had it at 14-10,then it was (28-)10.
“I was running out of timeouts.”
Amber Renz scored four points and Donie Ann Keeley and Kylie Romeo hit 3-pointers as Danville put together a 10-2 run to cut its deficit to 12-10 late in the first quarter.
The Lady Ironmen appeared to have put aside the effects of an 0-for-9 shooting start while Honesdale was making four steals.
Katie Miller scored for Honesdale with a second left in the first quarter then had six more points during the 14-0 start of the second quarter. Miller finished with 15 points and nine steals, leading Honesdale’s fast-paced attack.
“They put five very good athletes on the floor at the same time and they all can shoot,” Moser said.
Danville outscored Honesdale in the second half but could not get closer than 15 points until the final two minutes.
Renz, a freshman, led the Lady Ironmen with 12 points and eight rebounds. Romeo added six points, seven rebounds and three assists. Keeley had three steals.
Honesdale, the two-time District 2 champion, improved to 24-3.
Natashia Hessling had six points and five rebounds in the opening streak on the way to 12 points and nine rebounds.
Mary Martin added 11 points and eight rebounds while Morgan Biermelin had six assists.
Danville finished 22-6 using a young lineup. In addition to a junior and freshman starter, the six subs that played in the state tournament game were a junior, four sophomores and a freshman.
“This was a great experience for a lot of the young kids on our team,” Moser said. “I’m hoping they learn from it.”
