Bloskey picks up another top honor

BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsbu rg University field hockey player Maggey Bloskey, a graduate of Danville, has added another award to her growing list of postseason honors. She has been named the Division II Athlete of the Year by the Board of the Collegiate Women Sports Award sponsored by the American Honda Motor Company.

Bloskey will now be on the ballot with 11 other sport winners to determine the 2009-10 Division II Athlete of the Year award. The presentation of the award will be made on June 21, 2010 in Los Angeles.

Bloskey, who was also named the national Player of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) and was a first-team All-American, finished second on the Huskies in scoring with 15 goals and a team-high 12 assists, which is tied for the 12th best single season mark in school history. She had a great postseason scoring two goals and getting one assist in the national semifinals against Shippensburg, and also scored the game winning goal in overtime against Shippensburg in the PSAC title game. She was named both second team All-PSAC East in 2009 as well as a second team All- American by womensfieldhockey.com.

Bloskey was also selected the MVP of the PSAC Championships and was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament team.

Her reputation as a big-game performer extends back to the 2008 NCAA national semifinals when she scored all three goals for the Huskies, including the game winner in overtime, against the Raiders. She finished her career with 45 goals, tied for 10th all-time in school history, and 19 assists. Her 109 career points rank as the ninth best mark in school history.

To celebrate this nomination American Honda Motor Co., Inc. will donate $1,000 to the women’s athletic scholarship fund at Bloomsburg.

Bloomsburg finished the year with a record of 22-1 for retiring head coach Jan Hutchinson. The Huskies won their fourth straight NCAA Division II title and the 16th in school history.

Because basketball season is so long it is easy to forget that one or two moments in a single game can essentially make or break an entire season. While teams might play 30 games or so, most of them come down to a couple of possessions, spots where one little thing can be the difference between winning and losing, between making the postseason tournament or turning in the uniforms.
