Majors grabs third defensive player nod

By The Daily Item

MADISON, N.J. -- A year ago Susquehanna swept all the major awards when the Landmark Conference honored its men's basketball players.

This year, the Crusaders let some other teams grab some hardware, but the Crusaders were still awfully stingy, earning two of the Landmark's top awards to cap a season ending with another run to the postseason.

Senior guard Bryan Majors was named the Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season on Tuesday while freshman Harvy Pannell shared Rookie of the Year honors with Terrell Brown of Drew.

In addition, sophomore guard Spenser Spencer earned a spot on the 2009--10 all--Landmark Conference men's basketball team. Spencer claimed a second-team all-Landmark honor this year after earning a first-team award last year. He was also the conference's 2008--09 Rookie of the Year.

Spencer led Susquehanna in scoring this past season and currently ranks second in the conference with 15.2 points per game, contributing greatly to a Crusaders team that leads the Landmark with 73.9 ppg. He made a team-high 54 three-pointers this past season and added 52 assists and 47 steals (both second-best on the team). SU leads the conference in assists (378), steals (267) and assists-to-turnovers ratio (0.92) as well.

This is Majors' second straight Landmark Defensive Player of the Year award. He was also the Middle Atlantic Commonwealth Conference's Defensive Player of the Year for the 2006--07 season. He led Susquehanna and leads the Landmark by a wide margin in both assists and steals in 2009--10 with 121 and 70, respectively. His assists-to-turnovers ratio of 1.95 is tops on the team and in the Landmark.

Majors finishes his career with 251 steals -- a Susquehanna record --a nd 487 assists -- second-best in school history.

He also averaged 8.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per game for SU this past season. He made 39 three-pointers.

Pannell averaged 10.8 ppg in 2009--10 -- second-best on the team -- and added 4.3 rpg, 40 assists and 23 steals. He made 56.9 percent of his field-goal attempts, leading the team and ranking second in the Landmark to help SU lead the conference in that category as a team (45.8).

SU finished with a 15--11 overall record in 2009--10 and an 8--6 record in conference play, good for a spot in the Landmark playoffs. The Crusaders lost, 69--61, on the road to the eventual conference champions from the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Feb. 24 to end their season.
