216 photos, 12 judges, one incredible contest

The Daily Item summer outdoor photo contest winners

The Susquehanna Valley offers a variety of outdoor venues to savor with family and friends.

From wildflowers to wildlife, the 216 amazingly diverse pictures that were submitted this summer from readers of the Daily Item offered a colorful glimpse into outdoor treasures both local and abroad.

The hard part was choosing the winners.

Making 216 into 10. It was much harder math than one would think.

We had 12 judges, representing local photographers, figureheads in the art scene and outdoor enthusiasts.

Among the 12 judges, no two shared the same favorite photo. In fact, of the 216 en tries, 61 of them got at least one vote. It was so close, we had to narrow the field and then narrow it again. There was much debate, as each judge rallied behind his/her favorite shots.

Finally, based on a specialized scoring system and tons of feedback, the top 10 were selected.

Prizes were collected from very generous local businesses, photos were processed and uploaded into the pagination system, pages were laid out and copy was edited. Hours upon hours of volunteered time merged into the final photo package you see here today.

For most, these selections are total surprises. Winning photographers were mostly unavailable for comment Wednesday night. We’ll share some of their comments and feedback next Thursday on our weekly Great Outdoors page.

For now, we can all sit back, check out each photo one by one and let them take us each back to memories and fun times of our own in the outdoors and of summer days past.

Thank you, everyone, for making this project a very big success.

  • Starting over from perfect

Line Mountain and Mount Carmel will learn soon enough what comes from toting a perfect record into the postseason. Going 22-0 is obviously a remarkable achievement, but how much of a playoff boon is it? Does it infuse a team with an air of invincibility, believing it can overcome any obstacle in its path? Or does it feel like a Humvee-sized medal hanging from a noose-like ribbon around each girl's neck?

  • O'Brien sets tone for new routine

STATE COLLEGE -- Heavy metal music blared from speakers across the Penn State practice field before a pre-dawn workout, the throbbing bass beats echoing off nearby campus buildings.  Indeed, it is a new world in Happy Valley. Bill O'Brien is setting his own tone barely two months into his tenure as Nittany Lions head coach -- though apparently he left the choice of tunes to his players.

  • Rivals meet in LC semi

SELINSGROVE -- The last time it was important. This time it's to the end. When the Susquehanna and Juniata men's basketball teams met on Saturday night in Selinsgrove, the only thing on the line was a home game in the Landmark Conference tournament. Now the season will end for one of them.

  • CSS74F.jpg Defenders play big in playoff win

WILLIAMSPORT -- Abby Fisher didn't think the play was anything special. She just did what came naturally as an undersized forward amid a throng of 6-footers. Williamson's Cheyenne Jones pulled down a missed free throw and momentarily exposed the ball in front of Fisher. So the Warrior Run freshman grabbed for it and latched on like a vise. The held-ball gave possession back to the Defenders, and they cashed in with a bucket.

  • Don Steese's Outdoors column: The cost of going birdy

I was really happy the other day when I heard some economist on T.V. saying that inflation wasn’t a problem — then my wife and I went to the grocery store. My wife had about a pound of coupons and we still left $150 at the checkout counter. I then put a bag under each arm and stomped out of the store. Apparently economists hire someone else to do their grocery shopping for them. Anyhow, the grocery store episode got me thinking about how much the other necessities in my life actually cost.

  • Ken Maurer's Outdoors column: Go the extra mile

Trout season will be here before you know it. I’m hoping the mild winter continues right up to and including Mar. 31, when the early trout season opens in the southeastern counties. Who knows, as weird as the weather’s been, we may have to follow a snow plow to the trout streams. I’ve seen snow in April more than once.

The red panic button -- not the one on Barack Obama's desk, but the one within the reach of every sports fan of every ilk -- can be a dangerous thing. When do you hit it?

WILLIAMSPORT -- To the victors go the spoils, or, in this case, the top seeds and byes into the quarterfinals. That is the reward for the four sectional champions as they move into this weekend's District 4 Class AA tournament at Williamsport High School.

PHOENIX -- Manny Ramirez found a taker in Oakland -- at a bargain price. The suspended slugger agreed on a minor league contract Monday with the Athletics that is worth approximately $500,000 if he's added to the big league roster.
