BOYS BASKETBALL
SELINSGROVE -- In front of an overflowing crowd that came to see the Selinsgrove football team get its MaxPreps Tour of Champions trophy, the Seals' basketball team would give those fans who stuck around for the game afterwards something else to cheer about on Wednesday.
Behind 21 points from Alex Lupolt and a three-point play by Justin Keiser, Selinsgrove pulled out a 55-53 win over cross-river rival Shikellamy in a Heartland Athletic Conference Division I game.
Keiser made a three-point play the hard way to give the Seals (9-9, 6-4 HAC-I) a 54-53 lead with just seconds left on the clock. Keiser was fouled on a driving layup and he made the foul shot.
Spencer Hotaling helped Selinsgrove hold on for the win by making 4-of-6 free throws late in the game. Overall, he was 5-of-8.
"It was a back-and-forth game in the third and fourth quarters," said Selinsgrove coach Ray Moyer. "It was a good hard-fought game. It was a fun night, both teams played hard and it was a nice game."
Ryan Keiser added seven points and 11 rebounds, while Alex Knitter had seven points and eight rebounds for the Seals.
Omar Berry scored 11 points, while Adam Sees and Cody Daddario had 10 points apiece for Shikellamy (10-8, 3-7).
Danville 57, Shamokin 33
COAL TOWNSHIP -- Andrew Andreychik and Mikeal Owens-Wright each scored 16 points, and the Ironmen played very well defensively to rout the Indians in a HAC-I matchup.
Danville (11-5, 8-2 HAC-I) held Shamokin without a field goal over the final six minutes of the first half and forged a 16-point halftime lead. Andreychik scored 10 points in the second quarter, while Ryan Reichard added nine of his 11.
Owens-Wright poured in eight points in the third quarter. Michael Rudy had 12 of Danville's 36 rebounds.
Brent Forbes, the Indians' 1,000-point standout, scored a team-best 16 points, but six came after Shamokin (9-7, 6-3) fell behind by 29 early in the fourth.
WRESTLING
Benton 41, Mount Carmel 28
MOUNT CARMEL -- The Tigers reeled off six wins in a row between 285 pounds and 130 to come from behind and upset the Red Tornadoes in a District 4 Class AA team tournament preliminary match.
Third-seeded Mount Carmel (13-4) led 18-9 after Sean McCollum's forfeit win at 215.
Tyler DeMott then pinned Ahmad Abuomar in 1 minute, 10 seconds to get the match rolling in favor of 14th-seeded Benton (9-5).
Following a forfeit win, a pin by Mike Rhone (125) and a technical fall from Colton Fought (130), the Tigers led 41-18.
In the final two bouts of the match the Red Tornadoes got a major decision from Nick Dusendschine (135) and a pin from Dylan Hornberger (140).

It's difficult to recall exactly how the sequence unfolded because it happened so darn fast. Shikellamy made a couple baskets, and the crowd began to stir. It was still anybody's game, and the Braves had some momentum late in the third quarter of a recent run with Danville.

H.S. boys basketball: Selinsgrove rallies to top Southern Columbia
CATAWISSA -- In a battle between two schools better known for their football programs, Monday's game between host Southern Columbia and Selinsgrove naturally featured plenty of physical play. After a combined 43 fouls and 55 free-throw attempts, the Seals finally pulled it out. Reserve guard Tyler Krebs made five foul shots in the final minute and a half in Selinsgrove's 54-53 victory.

Now called the 13th annual Best Bowl/Strike Zone High School Pro-Am Scholarship Challenge, the two-day tournament was another success as it pitted some of the Valley's best young bowlers against each other in friendly competition.
