So, the question is, who is coming to Selinsgrove for the big 358/360 National Open this Saturday?
Glad you asked.
As previously noted, counted in are invading 410 sprint regulars Mark Smith and Daryn Pittman. Incidentally, Smith convincingly beat Pat Cannon in a 360 race sanctioned by URC on Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway. And Pittman took $4,000 in a URC race at the Grove a few weeks ago.
Also confirming their attendance are 360 racers Trevor Lewis and Kyle Purks. Lewis has won the last two Jack Gunn Memorials at Selinsgrove in a 360, besting Cannon both times.
Another confirmed entrant is regular Lincoln Speedway 410 racer Aaron Ott. Ott won the 360 Kasey Kahne Battle at the Grove in early August.
Not intending to invade are drivers Fred Rahmer, Greg Hodnett and Cory Haas. Tyler Walker says the Keen Motorsports team is trying to find an engine for the event.
Regular 360 racers Becca Anderson, Kramer Williamson and Davey Sammons are also good possibilities to compete. A 358 racer, Logan Schuchart will be in the field.
And nationwide 360 sprint star Jason Johnson of Eunice, Louisiana, will decide Tuesday evening if he will be attending. Johnson has over 165 career 360 and 410 sprint wins to his name, counting 13 in 360s this season including $10,000 victories at Skagit, Washington, and Eagle, Nebraska. Most recently, Johnson swept two days of action in Texas on Aug. 20-21.
RES ULTS: Thompsontown driver Josh Dressler drove a masterful race to score the first 410 sprint victory of his career Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway and was greeted by his uncle, Keith Kauffman, in victory lane.
Dressler wired the field in his 007, but don’t let that fool you. He held off Mike Erdley early and then allowed Tyler Walker to pass him for the lead before promptly passing him back. As if that wasn’t enough, Dressler then let Greg Hodnett by for control before changing lanes and passing him back before slamming the door on Hodnett in the third turn with five to go.
Chad Layton one-upped Rick Lafferty in the main and gained five markers to extend his points lead over Lafferty to 20, with the final points show coming up this Saturday as the opener of the 156th Juniata County Fair. It will be either driver’s first 410 title anywhere.
Waylon Wagner led every lap of the 33-lap Butch Renninger Memorial for late models over Scott Haus and Gary Beward. Dan Berry won pro stocks. There were 24 410 sprints, 23 lates and 15 pros.
At Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday it was Pat Cannon prepping for the upcoming 358/360 sprint Nationals with his ninth oval win of the season, over Blane Heimbach. Cannon is now up in the season points’ chase by 45 over Heimbach with two full point races to go plus the Nationals, which is show up points only. Coleby Frye invaded and took the late model win late from Tony Adams. Nate Kerstetter won the pro stocks event and Ricky Bender took roadrunners. There were 31 sprints, 23 lates and 21 pros in action.
John Rudisill and Lance Dewease split twin 20s for 410 sprints at Lincoln Speedway on Saturday night. For Rudisill, it was his career first in a sprint, while Dewease’s was his 35th at the oval. He set a new 20-lap track record of 5:37.346. There were 23 sprints.
Looking for his third title in a row, Brian Montieth is leading the points, with the crown to be declared this week.
Californian Tyler Walker finally tracked down his first career win at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night. Walker took the lead from Cory Haas with nine down, then held off Dewease’s sliders for the lead.
By virtue of two blown motors for Greg Hodnett, Brian Montieth closed to within 120 points of Hodnett for the season 410 sprint title with eight point races to go. George Suprick won sprints at Clinton County on Friday.
