---- — Southern Columbia graduate and starting Pitt fullback Henry Hynoski appears in a commercial promoting the upcoming football season.
The theme of the commercial is that the Panthers represent the city, and it shows members of the football team — including Hynoski — jogging through the city and ending up at Heinz Field. As they run through the streets, Pittsburgh natives drop what they're doing and follow the players to the field.
Hynoski also appears in a "making of" video available on Pitt's athletics website (pittsburghpanthers.com). He gives a brief interview about making the commercial.
Hynoski, who led the Tigers to four state championships during his tenure there, is a rising junior at Pitt.
Selinsgrove fans might also recognize someone else from the video — Thomas Jefferson grad Dom DeCicco, who's now a starting defensive back for the Panthers. As a quarterback, DeCicco led the Jaguars to a 27-14 win over the Seals in the 2006 Class AAA state quarterfinals. DeCicco rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns in that game, prompting then-Selinsgrove coach Bill Scott to say afterward, "I told DeCicco he's a cocky (jerk), but I'd take him on my team any day. He's cocky and he's good."
MAT MEN: A number of area wrestlers competed recently in the USA Wrestling Cadet Greco-Roman Tournament in Fargo, N.D.
Ryan Solomon and Ty Walter were two of the locals. Solomon, a rising sophomore at Milton, took fifth in the 215-pound weight class, while Walter, of Mifflinburg, competed at 160.
LEARNING FROM THE BEST: Members of the Sunbury Christian Academy Lady Eagles team recently attended Baptist Bible College camp in Clarks Summit. The camp was directed by BBC coach and former WNBA player Amber Jacobs.
The Eagles' Tiffany Billings received the Hustle Award and Carissa Erdman won the X-cross layup competition. Molly Gutelius and Erdman were named to the All-Star team.
WORLD CUP RECAP: The Daily Item asked four area soccer coaches and Daily Item soccer writer Todd Stanford to make predictions for the World Cup. So, how'd they do? Pretty well, overall. Selinsgrove girls coach Matt Metzger, Lewisburg boys coach Shawn Callender and Susquehanna University men's coach Jim Findlay all correctly predicted that Spain would win the title. Callender and Findlay also correctly picked Spain's Iker Casillas as the tournament's top goalkeeper.
ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE: The Milton Area Community Theatre put on a production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" this past weekend. Milton's all-time leading basketball scorer (and current basketball player at Mansfield University), Tony Fannick, had a role in the play, as did Milton resident and PIAA umpire Raymond "Duff" Ripka.
