Amazing show

The Associated Press

— Lake Augusta communities were treated to an amazing fireworks show this past Saturday. The individuals and organizations that collaborated on this spectacular event deserve a public a big thank you.

First is Robert “Chopper” Dietz who generously donated all the fireworks and resources for this outstanding display, bringing enjoyment and thrills to children of all ages.

Chopper had help from 40 registered technicians from the Northeast and Midwest.

Most had never heard of our beautiful region but were so impressed they plan to come back with family and friends.

Second are the staff of Shikellamy State Park, central and regional DCNR offices who cooperated in every way.

This level of professionalism is routine for the park manger, Frank Nanna, and his entire staff but helping to make this night happen requires a special thank you! Third are the local fire companies who worked with Chopper and his crew to manage the potential risks associated with this and any fireworks display.

Union Township, Shamokin Dam, Selinsgrove, and Hummels Wharf brought their experience, skills and equipment to the site.

Chopper and the firemen were aware of the potential risks, agreed they were manageable, and successfully controlled the small fires that occurred — a normal part of fireworks.

Last, thanks to the thousands of folks who sat on their porches, rooftops and front yards, lined sidewalks and businesses in Sunbury and Norry, came to the Marina, or spent the evening on the river watching the display. For the first time in years, all 750 parking spots at the Shikellamy State Park Marina were filed with cars bringing 2,000 people to the park.

Let us know if you enjoyed this night of fireworks from the overlook with an e-mail to co-chair@friendsofshikellamystatepark.org.

Community input helps us plan future events and activities.
