After reading the article in The Daily Item regarding artificial turf for the Shikellamy High School football field, it got me thinking: Do the parents of the Priestley Elementary School know there is new playground equipment that has been purchased and cannot be installed because of lack of finances?
That is my question to all of you parents.
The Priestley PTA has raised an estimated $45,000 for new playground equipment for approximately 475 students, including sixth-graders who transferred from C.W. Rice Middle School. After the purchase of this equipment, the PTA was informed it would need to be handicap-accessible which was not included in the original price.
The PTA received a verbal estimate for an additional $50,000 to $60,000 for these modifications to make the grounds ADA accessible.
With the frustration of closing the middle schools and now the talk of re-opening one, how can artificial turf be a topic of consideration? Although I’m sure the new turf would be a great future asset to the Shikellamy athletic department, the only immediate remedy I can justify would be to put the million dollars to better use and fix the things that are presently broken.
