This is in response to a recent article in The Daily Item by John Deppen in which he portrays the NRA as an organization whose membership bristles with enough firepower to destroy civilization as it now exists. I wonder if Mr. Deppen realizes the NRA that is so loathsome to him consists of approximately 4 million members of which a large percentage are veterans. These are the same veterans of which he likes to portray himself as an advocate.
Full disclosure here, I actually am a veteran (USAF) and a life member of the NRA. I, and many of my fellow veterans, compete annually in NRA-sanctioned shooting events. The rifle of choice of the competitive rifle shooters at these events is the Colt Ar-15 and its many clones. This includes the most politically incorrect of them all, the Bushmaster AR-15.
Over the years of attending these competitions, I have seen hundreds of these rifles on the firing line. Never once have any of these dreaded implements on its own volition jumped up from the line and shot any of us.
Mr. Deppen might be interested to know that Connecticut now has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the United States and none of them stopped the deranged maniac from killing the teachers and students at Sandy Hook. He might also be interested to know the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 (Brady Bill) was passed with the NRA's approval.
Another interesting fact is the Columbine tragedy occurred in 1999 and the Assault Weapons Ban was in effect from 1994 till 2004. Are we really supposed to believe another assault weapons ban will prevent any further such tragic events?
