---- — I am expanding on the good letter by Mr. Peeler concerning right-to-work laws. This is merely one instance in a recurring theme of proposals threatening the working fellow, and our local representative, Fred Keller, has inserted himself directly in the midst of it.
Several months ago Mr. Keller championed raising the current threshold for paying prevailing wage on public projects. What is interesting is this: Is he requiring the engineering firm to provide design for said project at half price? No! Is he requiring the materials supplier to provide the needed goods at reduced cost? No! Is he limiting the amount the wealthy construction company owner can make on the project? No! He just wants to cut the working dude -- by law.
The "right to work for less" law is in the same vein ... get cheaper labor, cut benefits, destroy pensions. Oh, some poorly informed people like to defend it by saying unions are out of control, are mob-run, or whatever other reason they can throw, but their arguments cannot make muster when compared to the benefits unions have elicited.
It just comes down to "cut the working guy."
The Simpson-Bowles deficit reduction plan contains 58 recommendations for reducing deficits. Of the very few which have even been considered, do you want to know which one has already been initiated? The "freeze federal employee pay for 3 years" proposal. They are now entering their third year of a pay freeze.
These are not the so-called DC bureaucrats people like to whine about; they are your neighbors who do the hard jobs. It's just so easy to cut the working guy, isn't it?
