Cheers: To Southern Columbia grad Henry Hynoski, who appears poised to make the jump from playing football on Saturday for the University of Pittsburgh to playing on Sunday in the NFL.
Hynoski ran for more than 7,000 yards and 100 touchdowns for Southern, and draft experts have him ranked as one of the best fullbacks available. Hynoski hopes to follow in the footsteps of his father, Henry, who was drafted in the sixth round by the Cleveland Browns in 1975. The elder Hynoski played in 14 games in 1975, carrying the ball seven times and catching four passes.
The NFL draft is April 28-30 in New York.
Cheers: To Kylie Kuhns, whose crusade to raise funds to help kids with cancer just keeps growing and growing. The Mifflinburg eighth-grader is appearing today on "The Rachael Ray Show as part of a show promoting her and five other young people who will pitch their causes for viewers. The public will then vote, and the winner will be profiled in USA Today.
Kylie's project, Kelsey's Dream, has provided 2,600 "chemo ducks" to cheer up children with cancer in hospitals in 17 states. We know who gets our vote!
Jeers: To departing Gov. Ed Rendell, who seems intent on leaving on a cloud of hot air -- from calling the NFL "wussies" for postponing a game in a blizzard to calling critics of state-run gambling "idiots" and "simpletons." Rendell did some admirable things while governor, but his less than graceful exit is eroding the number of reasons people might regret seeing him leave office.
Cheers: To the Ralpho Township Fire Company in Overlook, Northumberland County. The first-responders are among the first to respond to the availability of green technology, adding solar panels to the fire station. The project will cost $25,000, but the fire department expects that savings on its energy bill will pay for the work in eight years.
Cheers: To The Danville Business Alliance and local businessmen Tom Beiter Sr. and Bill Cole, who intervened to keep a community organization afloat by covering the cost of renting a municipal ballroom. Organizers with the Community Christmas Tree Program in Danville feared they might not be able to come up with the $575 rental fee.
Cheers: To state Rep. C. Adam Harris, R-82 of Mifflintown, and state Sen. John R. Gordner, R-27 of Berwick, who helped the Midd-West School District line up a $7 million interest-fee bond to help cover the cost of construction. The district also deserves acknowledgement for giving local contractors an opportunity to bid on the construction project. A Lewisburg company landed the almost $2.7 million heating, ventilation and air conditioning contract, meaning that local workers will be taking home the $48 an hour they earn on the job.
