As a resident of Sunbury, I've been following the story about the proposed alterations to the city park. I do not agree with these at all, except for maybe adding the fountain.
The monuments should stay as they are, as they balance both ends of the park.
Recent letters complaining about Sunbury's decline are missing a major point. The increasing number of rental units will always mean that the people living there may not become permanent residents of the city. Too many transients and people moving from unit to unit means that these residents will probably never attain enough sense of belonging to acquire enough pride in the city and its rich heritage to help maintain the city's integrity. The city also owns vacant houses that are falling down that should be demolished to ensure the safety of adjacent houses.
Rather than continue to antagonize the city's veterans and wasting money fixing something that's not broken, city officials should repair the city's infrastructure in order to attract stable residents and businesses interested in calling Sunbury home.

Mutual aid agreements in local law enforcement strike at the heart of basic small-town decency. When a neighbor is in need, those equipped to help ought to drop everything and spring to aid.
