Human litter

I initially read with curiosity and then disgust the article concerning the elimination of manure on roads. Have these people ever concerned themselves with all of the human litter along the roads rather than horse manure, which is naturally occurring, highly biodegradable and hardly offensive (since horses are vegetarians)? On my four-mile walk of a rural road today alone, I saw a plastic lid for a storage box, pieces of foam insulation, disposable diapers, several plastic cigar containers, not to mention paper and the dozens of aluminum, plastic and glass containers. And they are worried about horse manure! The man who proposed diapering a horse should be embarrassed!

The Amish are a very rich and important part of our culture in the Susquehanna Valley. It is bad enough that they have to tolerate the noise, exhaust and inconsideration of our motorized vehicles. Let us not hassle them about their manure.

As an avid walker, horse owner, bicyclist and rower (you should see the human litter in the river), I find horse manure on the road far less offensive than all of the human litter I encounter. People, stop worrying about things that are naturally occurring and hardly bad for the environment, and begin to clean up your own thoughtless human litter.

  • Mutual aid is necessary

Mutual aid agreements in local law enforcement strike at the heart of basic small-town decency. When a neighbor is in need, those equipped to help ought to drop everything and spring to aid.
