I hope those in the Susquehanna Valley who voted for President Obama are excited. Soon we can have terrorists living in our backyard. One of the president's first actions was to start in motion the closure of the Gitmo detainee facility within a year. Our beloved U.S. Rep. John Murtha, from western Pennsylvania, said suspected terrorists at the military's detention center in Cuba are "no more dangerous in my district than in Guantanamo," to Fox News on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
However Murtha doesn't have a federal facility in his district. I, for one, wouldn't want them in my backyard. We have a maximum security federal facility here in Lewisburg, with some of the best trained and experienced guards in the country. We don't need Lewisburg to get worldwide attention this way!
I pray for our president, no matter his political party, race or creed. I just hope now that he is in office, the president will do what is best for his country and drop the rhetoric.
Steve Mebius,
Lewisburg

Mutual aid is necessary
Mutual aid agreements in local law enforcement strike at the heart of basic small-town decency. When a neighbor is in need, those equipped to help ought to drop everything and spring to aid.
