SUNBURY —
After weeks of relatively mild temperatures, Old Man Winter arrived Tuesday with the first appreciable snowfall of the year, as most of the Valley was coated with around 2 inches before the precipitation ended by the mid-day.
But a meteorologist warned drivers to watch out for black ice this morning, likely making some roads slick and potentially dangerous for commuters.
A record low for the month on Tuesday led to the icy road conditions, said Mike Pigott, of AccuWeather in State College.
Overnight temperatures should drop to about 21 degrees, freezing Tuesday’s melted snow. .
He emphasized that early morning drivers should be extra careful.
Temperatures will still be in the 20s when the sun rises, with very little wind. Afternoon temperatures should hit 36 degrees today.
This latest storm, which dropped even more snow on Harrisburg, about 3.5 inches, took a track from Ohio, across Virginia, up the coast a bit before blowing out to sea.
The rest of the week’s temperatures look to moderate a bit, Pigott predicted.
“Look for highs in the low 40s by the weekend — not exactly warm, I’ll admit,” he explained. “Our forecasting models don’t show any chance of significant snow for at least a few weeks.”
