A Herndon couple is having trouble making ends meet. No, not having trouble — they can’t do it. They need help.
Both Ruth Sands and her husband, William, have disabilities. They are unable to work, and they are unable to make enough money to pay the bills. The money they receive monthly from Social Security is barely enough to pay for rent and electricity. The least they can spare goes toward propane heat.
Sands can’t remember the last time she was able to afford new underwear or a night gown — things that most people take for granted. “We have no money leftover,” Ruth said. “The bottom of my husband’s shoes have holes in them where his feet actually touch the ground. We don’t have any money leftover for him to buy a pair of shoes.”
She is grateful that The Needy Family Fund is here to add a touch of cheer to the holidays.
“This is drastically going to help us,” she said. “We are so grateful for any kind of help... God bless everybody.”
Each year, The Daily Item, the Salvation Army of Milton and Sunbury, Susquehanna Bank and the radio stations of Sunbury Broadcasting Corp. team up to raise money for families in need. The Salvation Army distributes toys, food, clothing, and gifts to eligible families. You are asked to please consider a generous contribution to the Needy Family Fund. Donations can be dropped off at any branch of the Susquehanna Bank.
The fund now totals $1,545.
