ALLENWOOD —
MAZEPPA — Eight fire companies from three counties responded to a four-alarm fire Thursday evening in Buffalo Township that gutted a decades-old sawmill. The blaze that took down the mill at Kuhns Bros. Log Homes at 390 Swartz Road near Mazeppa began at about 6:38 p.m., said Jim Messinger, chief of White Deer Township Fire Company and command central operator.
Nearly 100 firefighters from Union, Snyder and Northumberland counties brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, he said.
Eight tanker trucks, with capacity between 1,200 and 3,000 gallons, each filled four times from ponds at Mazeppa, about three miles away, and hauled the water up winding Black Run and Swartz roads to the scene.
