SHAMOKIN — High winds tore a roof of a building, uprooted trees, and brought down utility wires throughout Northumberland County Saturday.
Shamokin officials had to close the northbound lane of Market Street when the roof of a downtown business building blew off and portions were left scattered on the roadway between Chestnut and Spruce streets.
A tree fell on a car at the Snydertown Road home of Robert Schrawder and traffic was detoured on a section of Hallowing Run Road off Route 147 when an electrical wire fell and caught a tree on fire.
According to AccuWeather meteorologist Dave Houk, winds were reported as high as 45 mph in Selinsgrove Saturday.
The rain may have enhanced the wind, causing isolated gusts as high as 50 mph, he said.
By today, though, the winds should diminish to “hardly noticeable” at 6 to 12 mph while the rain persists.
“There will wet weather throughout the day and maybe into Monday, but the good news is that for the rest of the week, the nice weather we had last week will return,” Houk said.
