School roof woes headed to court

— SELINSGROVE — Leaks and defective shingles were detected on the roof of the Selinsgrove Area Intermediate School as soon as it was built 12 years ago, officials said, and now the district is headed to trial.

The school district sued the general contractor on the project, Lobar Inc., of Dillsburg, last year over the alleged faulty roof, and the company brought into the suit the subcontractor that installed it, American Roofing Inc., of Ohio.

Over the years, the roof has continued to leak and shingles have fallen off, causing the district to take action and seek damages of $700,000 for a replacement, solicitor Thomas Clark said.

Since the law is so specialized in this area, he said, the district hired attorney Ted Adler, of Camp Hill, to handle the suit.

All the parties have hired experts.

Clark said the school’s expert determined the roof’s installation was defective, while the roofing company claims it was a faulty design that created the problems.

A jury will be selected in October to hear the case in Snyder County Court.
