HARRISBURG —
Pennsylvania lawmakers have begun debating a Republican-sponsored proposal designed to drastically revamp how consumers buy alcohol and eventually shut down the state’s system of government run liquor stores.
Members of the state House began considering amendments Wednesday, a process that could lead to a final vote as early as Thursday.
Republican Gov. Tom Corbett supports liquor privatization, and wants to devote the proceeds to fund public education.
More than 100 amendments have been filed, but legislative leaders said far fewer were likely to be debated.
The proposal would give beer distributors first shot at 1,200 wine and spirit licenses and allow wine to be sold in grocery stores.
On Monday, the House Liquor Committee backed the bill in a 14-10 vote, with no Democrats supporting it.
