Fetter's Meats: Flames damage market

Fire crews save most of building

MILTON — Flames shot across the second floor and through the roof of Fetter’s Meats on Route 405 early Tuesday evening, but the quick response of area firefighters had the blaze under control after about 90 minutes, said Milton Fire Department Chief Don Haffner.

The two-alarm fire, which started shortly before 6 o’clock, caused heavy damage to storage areas, kitchens and offices on the second floor, Haffner added, but he could not estimate the extent of the damage.

Haffner thought the fire probably began on the second floor. “But it’s too early to tell the exact cause of the blaze,” he said.

The popular Milton meat market was insured, said owner Joe Snavely.

Snavely stood quietly outside the red barn-like structure as fire personnel cut through the roof to spray the flames that were flaring from the building.

“This has never happened before,” he said, shaking his head.

Snavely said he has owned the business since 1975.

“Everyone was getting ready to leave work when this started. This might have started in the furnace area. Thankfully, no one was hurt,” he said.

The business employs 12.

Fire police closed off traffic on Route 405 around Fetter’s until after 8 p.m.

“We’re not leaving until we make sure all the hot spots are out,” Haffner said. “But I think the worst is over.”

Responding to the blaze were fire and rescue personnel from Milton, White Deer, Watsontown, Warrior Run, Turbotville, Potts Grove and Lewisburg.
