COAL TOWNSHIP — A program that allows people to buy groceries at a half-off price is drawing more and more people to Valley churches.
Angel Food Ministries, an organization that provides food for people — regardless of faith — who are struggling financially, is now accepting June orders.
The orders can be picked up at host sites in Coal Township (Mountainside Assembly of God, 648-8818), Lewisburg (United Pentecostal Church, 524-1228), Middleburg (Sound Truth Ministries, 837-1045), Mifflinburg (Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren, 966-1183), Milton (Christ Wesleyan Church, 742-8987), Port Trevorton (Witmer’s United Methodist Church, 374-4400) and Sunbury (River of Life Assembly of God, 286-5329).
There is no income requirement to take part in the AFM program, and at a cost of $30, the basic package provides enough food for an individual for one month or a family of four for about a week.
June’s menu includes: 1.5 pounds ribeye steaks, 2 pounds home-style lasagna, 2 pounds boneless/skinless chicken breast chunks, 28 ounces jumbo beef patties with gravy, 1 pound lean ground beef, 1 pound hot dog, 10 ounces individually wrapped cheese, 20 ounces shoestring fries, 1 pound broccoli cuts, 12 ounces peanut butter, 1 pound rice, 1 pound pinto beans, 1 pound margarine tub and 32 ounces shelf-stable milk.
A senior box menu that consists of 10 individual fully cooked and labeled meals, comes complete with heating instructions. Each meal has no added sodium, is low in fat and is nutritionally balanced for seniors with 3 ounces of protein, two vegetables or fruit and a starch. The box sells for $28.
Also available is an all-new allergen-free box, processed to eliminate the eight top serious allergens, which include peanuts, soybeans, milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, tree nuts and gluten. It includes 1 pound each of breaded chicken tenders, chicken breast filet, chicken nuggets, chicken wings, and cube steak, $25.
A seafood box includes: 2 pounds ocean perch filets, 2 pounds tilapia and 3 pounds haddock filets, $35.
One or more special boxes are available only with the purchase of the standard box.
n 6 pound assorted meat box: 1.5 pound bone-in strip steaks, 2 pounds pork chops, 1.5 pounds bacon-wrapped beef patties and 1 pound bratwurst with cheese, $22.
