WILLIAMSPORT — One of the 11 Northumberland County residents arrested last year in a state drug sweep has been sentenced to the mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison.
Evidence against Shadi Mustafa Abuomar, 20, was referred to federal authorities, and he pleaded guilty to a cocaine distribution charge.
U.S. Middle District Senior Judge James F. McClure Jr. also on Wednesday fined Abuomar $500 and placed him on supervised release for four years after the jail term. He receives credit for nine months he already has served.
The charge alleged he sold crack cocaine to an undercover agent on June 4 and powder cocaine on June 12.
A presentence memorandum filed on his behalf said the native of Jordan has had struggles due to his race. He grew up in Shamokin, but his family lives in Mount Carmel.
Abuomar was among those arrested on state charges of making, selling and dealing heroin, crack and powder cocaine, marijuana and prescription pills.
Officials at the time described the drug sweep as targeting mostly mid-level dealers, some of whom allegedly brought drugs into the Susquehanna Valley.
