SUNBURY — The 27th annual Sunbury Fire Department Firemen’s Fair will begin at 10 a.m. this morning in Cameron Park.
Despite two major structure fires in the past two months — first at the Peppermint Ristorante and Music Club in February and then at the Salvation Army Thrift Store earlier this week — department President Dale Henry said the Sunbury Fire Department has not suffered major financial setbacks as a result of fighting the blazes.
With a volunteer force, the biggest cost when fighting a fire is diesel fuel, Henry said, but he added idling trucks don’t use a lot of it.
Henry, a member Sunbury Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1, estimated the company’s truck used up only about $80 worth of fuel — half its tank — while on the scene on Tuesday’s fire. That company spends about $900 annually on fuel, he said.
The annual firemen’s fair brings in about $21,000 annually for the department, Henry said. The money is distributed evenly among the department’s six companies and the fire police for them to use as they see fit.
This year’s fair will feature food including a chicken and ham barbecue, crafters and vendors.
Entertainment will be provided by the Cloverleaf Cloggers from 10 to 10:45 a.m.; Gym Starz from 11 a.m. to noon; Sunbury City Band from noon to 1 p.m.; Warrior Concepts Int’l from 1 to 2 p.m.; a parade, trophy presentation and firemen’s challenge from 2 to 5:30 p.m.; and soloist Nancy Meister from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The drawing for the 2009 Ford Mustang car raffle, plus cash prizes at 7 p.m. The candy apple red, 2009 Ford Mustang is the grand prize in the raffle organized by the Sunbury Fire Department.
The Mustang was sold to the fire department at a discounted price, according to Dan Saxton of the fire department. Saxton said there are only 325 tickets available at a price of $100 each. He said the department hopes to make a profit of $10,000.
