Shamokin man hurt in Route 890 crash

SUNBURY — A Shamokin man was flown to the hospital after he pulled out in front of a truck tractor late Wednesday morning.

James H. Barrett, 86, of 126 E. Chestnut St., was stopped on Seven Points Road at the intersection with Route 890 — at Wolfe’s Crossroads — just before 11 a.m., when he pulled out in front of Ronald W. Kahler, 61, Herndon, who was heading north on 890, Stonington State Police said. There is no stop sign on 890 at the intersection.

Barrett struck Kahler’s 2000 Freightliner truck tractor, which crushed the driver’s side of Barrett’s Chrysler Town and Country minivan.

The 86-year-old was seriously injured and had to be flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville by LifeFlight helicopter. The helicopter landed in a nearby field next to a cemetery and took off with Barrett aboard shortly after the crash.

His condition was not available Wednesday night.

Kahler was not injured, according to police.

Barrett will be cited for a traffic violation.

State police were assisted by Americus Ambulance, Shamokin Dam Fire Company, Friendship Hose Company and Stonington Fire Company.
