SELINSGROVE — Anthony Hallden’s problems began early last Wednesday morning, when he was stopped by a Selinsgrove police officer while driving an allegedly stolen vehicle.
Police didn’t know at the time the Chevrolet Blazer was stolen, but Hallden, 18, was cited because he was driving on a learner’s permit and could not produce the vehicle’s registration or insurance cards. The license plate on the Blazer did not belong to the vehicle, either.
Thursday afternoon, Selinsgrove police received word from Sunbury police that the Blazer Hallden was driving the day before was stolen from a Sunbury service station on Oct. 7.
At about 1 a.m. Saturday, Selinsgrove police attempted to serve a felony warrant on Hallden, based on a charge of receiving stolen property in connection with his driving the stolen Blazer.
When an officer told him he was under arrest at his 205 N. Market St. residence, Hallden fled into the house. When the officer pursued Hallden into the residence, Hallden attempted to assault him and then fled out the rear door of the house.
He eluded a search that included a bloodhound.
A police informant reported seeing Hallden in Shamokin Dam at about 6 p.m. Sunday, and when a Selinsgrove officer spotted him a short timate later, he fled on foot and climbed the fence around the Sunbury Generation power station’s coal yard. He again eluded police.
Finally, he was spotted on the Veterans Memorial bridge by a Sunbury officer around 10 p.m. Sunday. When confronted, Hallden leaped off the bridge, once again avoiding capture.
A short time later, residents on South Second Street saw him enter the Wirerope Works complex and called police.
Area police converged on the site and officers entered the building with a heat-seeking device. They located Hallden hiding in a carton on the second floor and took him into custody without incident.
Hallden was arraigned before District Judge John T. Robinson in Selinsgrove at 1:25 a.m. Monday. He was charged with receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unauthorized transfer of registration, driving without a license, driving without insurance and driving without registration.
Officer from Point Township, Sunbury, Point township, Shamokin Dam, Ralpho Township and Selinsgrove, as well as state police and Sunbury Fire Department, assisted with the search and capture.
Hallden was taken to Snyder County Prison in lieu of $20,000 straight bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m.
