SUNBURY — A Sunbury businessman donated $15,000 to the music programs at Shikellamy’s two middle schools so underprivileged children can participate in the program.
David Woodring, owner of Statewide Tax Recovery Service and Central Credit Audit, presented a check to C.W. Rice Principal Frank Boyer and Sunbury Middle School Principal Michael Hubicki at Thursday’s school board meeting.
“One of the things that’s always been a passion of mine is music,” Woodring, son of Sunbury Mayor Jesse Woodring, told the board. “It’s near and dear to my heart.”
He said he wanted the money to be set aside to buy instruments for students whose parents aren’t able to afford them.
Hubicki said the money — split evenly between the two middle schools — will be used to buy new or nearly new instruments for students in the band.
There are about 90 students at each school involved in the band, he said. “Ever since I’ve been there, it’s been a really thriving program. ... This is a gift that’s going to benefit many, many kids for many, many years.”
According to Hubicki, one of Woodring’s children plays in the band at the Sunbury Middle School and Woodring himself played in the band when he attended middle school.
In other business, the school board agreed to allow PPL Electric Utility to retrofit one of its schools with energy-efficient lighting equipment.
Dan Saxton, Shikellamy’s director of facilities, said PPL offered to install the equipment — including dimmers and occupancy sensors — in either two of the district’s classrooms or a gymnasium.
He recommended the district have the lighting apparatus installed in a gymnasium, since that could yield a greater savings.
He said PPL may meter the room to determine what the savings are.
