Night light blamed in fire
MARION HEIGHTS — An overheated night light was the apparent cause of a fire that damaged a former bar and restaurant Sunday.
Norman Fedder, state police fire marshal, pinpointed the cause and determined that the fire was accidental.
Fedder said the blaze started in an electrical receptacle on the south wall of the basement at 100 E. North St. and spread to the first-floor kitchen. He estimated damages at $75,000. It was not known whether the owner, Metro Burak, has insurance.
Pet Idol stars to land on TV
SUNBURY — Some of the expected stars of the coming Pet Idol competition are scheduled to be featured in a live remote broadcast on WNEP Channel 16 Friday.
Among the animals scheduled to appear between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. are Clydesdale horses and square-dancing dogs. Pet Idol will begin at 1 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Susquehanna Valley Mall, Hummels Wharf.
Entertainment during the competition will include a parade, Conestoga buggy rides and high-wheeler duo cyclists. More than $1,000 in cash and prizes will be offered in such categories as No. 1 Pet Idol, Best Dressed, Most Unique, Most Talkative, Most Talented and the No. 1 Owner Look-Alike. People’s Choice awards will be determined by online voting after the event.

Library goes green
McEWENSVILLE — The Montgomery House Warrior Run Area Public Library will be getting its green on this month with four workshops and a movie series. The program is designed to inform and provide environmentally friendly ideas that can be initiated at home with little or no cost.
Attendees at each workshop will receive a free gift. The Go Green series is sponsored by the Smith Fund of the Williamsport-Lycoming Community Foundation.
The schedule is: 1 p.m. Saturday, container gardening; 2 p.m. Oct. 11, environmental author John Sheirer talking about his latest book, “Loop Year;” 1 p.m. Oct. 18, energy basics; and 1 p.m. Oct. 25, composting.
The library will show the BBC’s “Planet Earth” DVD series at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday.

LEWISBURG — The Public Library for Union County is the official repository for flood information in Union County.
Information for Lewisburg borough will be available in order to comply with the recertification program, which makes residents eligible for a 10 percent rate reduction for flood insurance.
