RIVERSIDE — Corporate officials at Cherokee Pharmaceuticals said Thursday they will announce their plans for a $2 million expansion next week.
Riverside officials have been informed of the expansion and mentioned it during a meeting Wednesday, but the company is withholding details at this time.
“We have some things going on and will have more next week,” Cherokee spokeswoman Betse Humphrey said.
Humphrey would not comment on whether the expansion will result in additional jobs or other questions relating to the project.
The proposed addition was included in a zoning report read at Wednesday’s Riverside Borough Council meeting.
Borough officials said no plans have been submitted for the project.
Since acquiring the former Merck property in January 2008, PRWT Services has said it will invest more than $15 million to upgrade the Cherokee plant.
In January, PRWT announced it was working to bring more business to the plant by negotiating with a St. Louis-based biochemical company.
Cherokee has a five-year supply agreement with Merck to continue making active ingredients for antibiotics. The agreement is valued at $100 million to $200 million annually.
Sherri Kyle, PRWT vice president of communications, referred comment on the Riverside expansion to Humphrey.
When PRWT acquired the plant, Chairman and CEO Willie Johnson said the purchase was consistent with his company’s vision of growing the company by expanding to new markets, services and lines of business.
John Elliott serves as president and Justin Noll as plant manager of the Cherokee plant, which employs 400.
The complex covers 323 acres with 127 acres inside the fence line.
