Two stores, warehouse to open in Valley

By Gina Morton

More than 1,100 jobs will be created by the opening of two Target stores and a distribution center in the Susquehanna Valley, officials said.

Pennsylvania CareerLink is holding a job fair from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 713 Bridge St., Selinsgrove.

Advertisements say the company is looking for team leaders for the sales floor, food service, guest services and Starbucks, as well as office, pharmacy and other specialists.

While construction has been quiet at Great Stream Commons near Allenwood, a spokeswoman from Target said Tuesday the company owns the property earmarked for the distribution center, and construction will continue beginning the second or third quarter of the year.

“There is not a firm time-line for opening the facility,” she said, but added a distribution center still is intended for the site at this point.

Michael Adams, director of the Union County Industrial Development Corp., said Wednesday the site has been quiet because the business has been going through the planning process.

“You have the initial lull in which there doesn’t appear to be anything going on because of the permit and approval process. Once they begin construction, you will notice them up there,” he said.

He said plans have been submitted to Gregg Township, and the process is moving along well.

“What happens before you can move dirt or begin construction is you need to have permits and approvals in place,” Adams said. “Right now, they are in the process of doing that. The majority of the approvals have been received. I’m pretty comfortable in saying they will be beginning construction sometime very close.”

Adams said the distribution center is a 1.7 million-square-foot warehouse, and when operational, it will have about 800 employees.

The Target spokeswoman said the Muncy store, located across from the Lycoming Mall, is set to open July 27, and the store still is hiring employees.

Between 150 and 250 people will be hired, she said, and the positions will range from cashiers to executive jobs.

She said all applicants go through an interview process to determine where they best fit in.

The Hummels Wharf Target store, in Monroe Marketplace along Routes 11-15, will open Oct. 12.

“That store will employ 150 to 250 team members as well,” the spokeswoman said, “and it will be a similar recruiting and interview process.”

Similar positions will be offered at that location.
